deadman valve는 handle 내부에 spring이 설치되어 있어서 운전원이 handle을 release하면 safe position으로 되어, 자동적으로 열리거나 닫히는 구조의 밸브로서 spring return handle valve라고도 한다. 즉, 흐름이 유지되기 위해서는 운전원이 handle을 holding하고 있어야 한다.
이러한 밸브 configuration에 따라 self closing valve라고도 하며, plant safety를 높이고 product leak, spill, loss를 방지하고 tank overfilling도 줄일 수 있다.
주로 ball valve에 spring return handle (deadman handle)이 설치되며 butterfly valve에도 설치된다. 운전원이 handle을 turning한 후 grip을 release하면 이 밸브의 spring은 resting position으로 되돌아간다.
handle은 적합한 valve에 matching되어야 하므로 dimension을 확인해야 하고 필요시 mounting pad나 drive size가 다를 수 있다.
주로 draining이나 sampling시에 사용되어 운전원이 valve를 열고 handle을 계속 잡고 있는 상태에서 draining이나 sampling을 진행하고 이후 handle을 놓게 되면 safe position인 closed위치로 되돌아가서 자동으로 잠기게 된다. 이는 간단하면서도 안전하고 경제적이며 신뢰성있는 valve조작이 가능하다.
이들 밸브들은 sampling, draining외에도 steam letdown, bypass, pressure relief이나 운전원이 존재하지 않을 때 밸브는 반드시 OFF position에 있어야 하는 공정에 사용되며 hot oil, steam generator intermittent blow down에도 적용된다. 1/4"~1/2"는 full port이고 3/4"~2"는 reduced port type이다.
